"Disintegrating & Regenerating Library"

"Overview"

The library shows the moment that it is disintegrating and regenerating at the same time. Framework and scaffolding are variable and embedded in old library for new needs and maintaining traditional function of original library. Disintegrating, corrosion, trim create access through library in urban planning.

"Entry view"

I design based on the disintegrating concept to trim the facade on La Trobe St and Little Lonsdale St following my urban planning. This view is the entry of public space on Little Lonsdale St. External walls are disintegrating and internal floor plates and structure expose. At the same time, historical parts of library is revealing. I look at the evolution history of State library. I find the original rotunda form is demolished and replaced by new dome. So I use the original demolised rotunda form and build in the constructivism style to make it looks like unfinished structure to fit my concept. People can sit here or get in to the library and they can go to upper floor which is connected to the lecture theatre through staricases.

"Entry view"

To make library on La Trobe side more public, I use pixellation to create disintegrating
effect and put the original interior strcture in newspaper reading room on the facade as the canopy for rest. Inspired by conical intersect by Goldon Matta Clark and Phillips Exeter Academy Library by Louis Kahn that he cut holes and bookshelves are exposed behind. I cut continuous holes in library for access and also cut glass circles on the facade besides so that when people pass through, they can see what happening inside. For the facade on Russell St, I design the glass facade with platforms inside and the structure is lifted up for large opening and access underneath.

"Scaffolding view"

For regenerating scaffolding, I look at the precedent House platforms by Sou Fujimoto in Tokyo and design staggered platforms connected by staircases for hierarchy. Also, I'm inspired by cedric prive fun place to get the ideas that these scaffolds are always changing and alive for new needs of people. I design interesting and various movement through platforms. blue platforms are connected by yellow staircases, and there are several large red elevator towers for vertical movement as well.

"Masterplan"

In my urban planning, I demolish parts of library faced to La Trobe St for public space linked to RMIT. There is a cafe which is convenient for students in RMIT. Then, continue demolishing sections on Little Lonsdale St for children playground and public entry and move orginal children quater to make it connect to children playground. Also, I create direct access between La Trobe St and Little Lonsdale St to connect city blocks. And i want to enhance the transparency of library on Russell St. So external walls at Russell St side are demolished to make it more public and for direct walkway from Russell St to the dome. For other new programmatic planning, the original Arts reading room is changed to be lecture theatre and it becomes curved form different spacial experience.
